  • Wine is a luxury item. Therefore, you shouldn't drink it like you drink water. It's best to concentrate on the contents of your glass and take it in with all your senses. Otherwise, you'll miss out on most of the enjoyment. For this reason, we've written down 8 steps for you that you should follow so that you can enjoy your wine to the fullest.

    1. Opening the bottle

Almost every wine bottle has either a cork or a screw cap. You can remove the cork with a simple corkscrew. You don't need an expensive corkscrew for this! The only important thing is to check the quality of the wine by smelling the cork. If the smell is very sour and unpleasant, your wine is already starting to spoil.

You can't do such a smell test with the screw cap.

    By the way:

Many people claim that a wine with a screw cap is of inferior quality. But that is not true! Many winemakers now use screw caps because they are cheap and easy to use.

    2. Let the wine breathe in a carafe

This step is only important if you are serving a young red wine. With all other wines, contact with oxygen can even lead to the wine turning over. But with young red wines, it is even more worthwhile to decant your wine. This involves pouring it into a special decanter and leaving it to stand for a few hours. Through contact with oxygen, more aromas are released.  released and the taste intensifies again.

    3. The right glasses

The glass can also have an influence on the taste of the wine. The aromas can only develop best in a suitable wine glass. We have already written in detail in another article which glass is best for which wine. In general, however, white wine feels most comfortable in narrower glasses, while red wine prefers bulbous glasses.

    Remember:

You hold your wine glass by the stem and not by the glass. This not only leaves unwanted fingerprints, but also causes the wine to become undesirably warm due to the warmth of your hand.

    Good to know!

Who do you actually give a present to first?

Normally, the rule is "guests get it first". This does not apply to pouring wine! The correct thing to do would be for the host to first limit himself to a small sip and then test it for color, smell and taste. If nothing unusual is found, he can now pour the wine for his guests. But here, it's "ladies first". The wine is limited to women first, and then the men. Finally, the host pours himself another sip.

    4. The color of the wine

The wine is now restricted and can be drunk immediately! Unfortunately, it is not quite that simple. Wine is a luxury item and should be enjoyed with all of the senses. This means that you should first look at the color of the wine. This can give us valuable information about the wine.

    You can remember :

    1. The paler the white wine, the younger it is. In addition, the vines were grown in a cooler climate. The result is a very dry white wine, with little sweetness but a lot of acidity.
    2. The darker the white wine, the more mature it is. It probably comes from the southern growing regions and often has less acidity than wines from cooler regions. However, the residual sugar content is higher and it therefore tastes sweeter.
    3. Deep-colored red wines are often very young and were grown in warm climate regions. The grape varieties often have a thicker skin, which is why the wine color is much more intense.
    4. Pale red wines, on the other hand, are overripe and were grown in cooler regions. They usually have more tannins, more alcohol and less acid.

    5. Panning

Although it sounds very ineffective, you can achieve great results with simple, small hand movements. By swirling the glass, the aromas that initially lie dormant can rise to your nose more easily. You can read below how important it is to smell the wine.

    Just note:

Small swirls are perfectly adequate. You don't have to shake your glass completely.

    6. Rich

Smell and taste are closely linked. Both sensory impressions are transmitted to the brain, which combines the information and can therefore recognize and classify the aromas. This also means that if you don't smell your wine beforehand, you're missing out on more than half the enjoyment.

    7. Roll wine in your mouth

You can often see it! Many people think that in order to really enjoy their wine, you should take small sips. But that's wrong! In order to really recognize the aromas, very small sips are usually not enough. The entire mouth must be covered by the wine. The wine must "roll through the mouth once". This means that you gently rinse the wine through your mouth. This activates and teases out all the taste buds in the oral cavity.

    8. Enjoy

Wine is a luxury item and not a thirst quencher! That's why it's advisable to drink slowly and carefully. Wine connoisseurs call this tasting . After taking a sip, you should also pause for a moment and observe the finish.
