    Gin. At a glance.

Gin is a very diverse spirit. It comes in a wide variety of types and variations, which is why it can be made in different ways. However, the production of gin can be roughly divided into 4 steps . These steps are so simple that many gin fans like to make their own gin at home. ( Make your own gin )

    1. Maceration : The first step is also the most important step. Here, all the ingredients are mixed together and soaked. A gin consists of just 3 main ingredients: a high-proof neutral alcohol, juniper berries and the so-called botanicals. The neutral alcohol must be of agricultural origin and usually consists of grain or potatoes. It is not uncommon for vodka to be used as a base. The juniper berry belongs in every gin because it characterizes the taste and gives it a sweet, spicy and slightly bitter taste. To give the gin its final touch, botanicals are added to the alcohol. These include berries, seeds, fruits, spices and herbs. These aromas ensure that each gin gets its unique and individual character and explain why gins can taste so different. The various spices are soaked in the alcohol until the aromatic substances have dissolved.
    2. Distillation : In the second step, the water is separated from the alcohol. Since the alcohol evaporates faster than the water, only the aromatic vapors of the alcohol rise into the still. There, the vapor is cooled and liquefied again. You now have a high-proof gin that has an alcohol content of around 96% vol.
    3. Storage : Unlike many other spirits, gin does not need to be stored. However, some types are stored for several weeks so that all the aromatic substances can combine well after distillation.
    4. Bottling : In the last step, the gin must be diluted with low-lime water before it is bottled, otherwise it will have too high an alcohol content. After dilution, the gin must have an alcohol content of at least 37% vol. After that, it is simply decanted and labelled.

The complex botanicals characterize the gin and therefore have many  different flavors. For this reason, it can sometimes be very difficult to distinguish and name the different flavors. It is therefore a good idea to find out about the different aromas in advance in order to be optimally prepared for the next gin tasting!

    Fruity

Fruity and mild gins are very popular. They often taste refreshingly of different fruits such as apple, peach, apricot and grapes.

    Sweet

To achieve a classic, sweet taste, botanicals such as licorice, cinnamon and cardamom are often used. The taste is often associated with honey, liquorice and vanilla.

    Flowery

If your gin has a floral note, it should smell very fresh, calming and perfumed. Rose petals or other flowers are usually used as botanicals. Many people associate this with rose, marigold, chamomile and elderberry.

    Spicy and piquant

Those of you who don't have a sweet tooth should opt for the spicier and piquant whiskies. To achieve this flavor, many distillers use coriander and pepper. The gin is often then characterized with black pepper, cardamom and nutmeg.

    citrus note

A popular botanical is lemon peel. This gives the gin a juicy citrus aroma. Perceived associations would be lemon, lime, grapefruit and pomelo, for example.

The more the distillers experiment with their gin, the further it moves away from the classic gin flavor. This style is then called " New West ." The gin then does not correspond to any of the flavors mentioned above, but has its own special flavor and can even taste like coffee, for example.

Gin is a very versatile spirit that can be enjoyed in different ways. Each individual has to decide for themselves which variant is best for them.

    1. Gin neat: Like all other spirits, you can of course drink gin neat and without any other additives. This is the best way to recognize and distinguish the different flavors of the gin. However, it is recommended that most gins be stored at temperatures between 18° and 20°, as otherwise too many flavor facets are suppressed. It is also important to use a high-quality gin, as the cheaper gins mostly have too strong an alcoholic note.
    2. Gin Tonic: Gin Tonic is one of the most popular and diverse long drinks. Its main features are its varied taste and its ease of preparation. The perfect Gin Tonic should consist of 4 components: Gin, tonic water, ice cubes and gin and tonic spices. There is no perfect ratio between gin and tonic water. It depends on personal taste. If you want to emphasize your gin more, it is best to choose a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. If you prefer a milder and lighter Gin Tonic, you should choose a ratio of 1:3. Ice cubes in Gin Tonic are a must for many. But remember: the more ice, the better! As a final component, you can add the so-called Gin Tonic spices such as lemon, lime and cucumber slices or rosemary sprigs.
    3. Gin in cocktails: Gin is an ideal mixed spirit, as it shows us every time we have a glass of gin and tonic. But even though the gin and tonic is one of the most popular long drinks, there are other drinks and gin cocktails that are definitely worth mentioning. The classics include the Negroni, the Martini Cocktail and the Gimlet. All three cocktails are quick and easy to prepare and are also a good alternative to the gin and tonic.
