Riedel glasses: a glass for every grape variety

In the 1950s, the Riedel family decided to match their wine glasses to the grape varieties. This means they are now offering the world's first variety-specific glass collection, true to the motto: the wine determines the shape of the glass!

The problem is that not all of us have the space to store wine glasses that are adapted to the grape variety. In addition, the glasses sometimes differ only slightly from one another, which is why you have to ask yourself: is it worth it?

The universal glass: one glass for everything!

You can never go wrong with a universal glass! As the name suggests, this glass can be used universally for different types of wine! Whether white, red, sparkling or dessert wine. The one-glass-for-everything offers great enjoyment for all types of wine.

The most popular universal glasses include the Gabriel glass and the universal glass from Zalto. However, it must be said that the Zalto universal glass is only available in a mouth-blown version. Therefore, both the quality and the price are very high. The Gabriel glass, on the other hand, is available in a mouth-blown and a machine-blown version. Therefore, the latter is a cheaper alternative.

Even professionals like to use universal glasses. This means that this glass is guaranteed not to be a bad purchase for the “normal” wine lover either.

    Red wine glasses

So now you know that you can either buy a separate glass for each individual grape variety, or a glass for each individual grape variety. But that is too extreme a choice for most wine drinkers. That's why we're now showing you a selection of 2 red wine glasses that are suitable for either fruity or strong red wines!

    1. Classic Burgundy glass (red wine)

The classic Burgundy glass is known for its thick-bellied bowl and is therefore a little rounder than a normal red wine glass. This glass is perfect for aromatic and fruity wines. Because of their voluminous character and fine flavor facets, they need a lot of air supply so that the aromas and flavors can develop well.

Popular wine varieties include Pinot Noir, Point Noir, Barbera, Piedmont and Barolo.

    2. Classic Bordeaux glass (red wine)

If you prefer strong red wines with a pine-like aroma, you should go for a Bordeaux glass. They are usually particularly tall and have the shape of a tulip. The high chimney makes the glass perfect for swirling, which condenses the scent molecules and then escapes over the edge of the wine glass. The wine reaches the tip of the tongue first through its narrow opening. This means that you first taste the fruity sweetness, which reduces the bitterness of tannic wines.

A Bordeaux glass is suitable for grape varieties such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

    White wine glasses

White wine glasses are smaller and less bulbous than red wine glasses, as they require less ventilation. White wine should also be drunk cold. The smaller bowl reduces the capacity, which means that you have to refill the wine more often. This means that the wine does not warm up as quickly and stays well chilled until the end.

But even with white wines you can distinguish between two classic glasses .

    1. The Chardonnay glass (white wine)

Strong and lush white wines should be drunk from a Chardonnay glass. Similar to the Burgundy glass, the Chardonnay glass offers strong white wines more room to develop, with its remarkable width and narrowing chimney.

Popular wine varieties include Chardonnay, Meursault, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

    2. The Riesling glass (white wine)

Light, aromatic wines feel particularly at home in this glass. The narrow body allows the fruit aromas to be brought out to their full potential. The aromas are also enclosed by the slightly closing shape at the end of the wine glass, which ensures a long-lasting taste.

Wines such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gerwürztraminer taste best from the Riesling glass.

The sparkling wine and champagne glass

Of course, we can't forget the sparkling wine! Whether it's birthdays, Christmas or New Year's Eve. On holidays, people usually toast with a glass of sparkling wine or champagne. It is typically served in a tall tulip-shaped glass. This shape was chosen for a reason: the narrow opening keeps the carbon dioxide in the glass for a longer time. In addition, most glasses have a so-called effervescence point on the bottom of the bowl, which ensures that the carbon dioxide rises in the form of small chains of bubbles at the edge of the glass. Without this point, the sparkling wine would usually not come into its own.

    The perfect rosé wine glass

For rosé wine, it is also important to choose a glass shape that is best suited to perfectly accentuate the fruity notes. It is best to use a glass with a narrow diameter. The rim of the glass should also be slightly curved outwards. This shape ensures that the notes of the wine are concentrated and the tongue in particular can perceive the fruity notes and the delicate acidity. But if another glass is too much for you, you can also use a white wine glass.

    Summary

    1. The stronger and more tannic the red wine , the better a glass with a high chimney and a medium “belly” is.
    2. For fruitier and lighter red wines, a glass with a thicker “belly” is recommended, which allows more oxygen contact and thus makes the wine appear more intense.
    3. The lighter and more aromatic the white wine , the more suitable a glass with a smaller diameter is, as it allows the aromas to be concentrated as best as possible.
    4. The stronger and more lush the white wine , the more suitable a voluminous glass with a good width is.
    5. For sparkling wines , a tall and narrow glass is best so that the bubbles can rise easily.
    6. For rosé wine , you can either use a white wine glass or choose a glass with a narrow diameter that is curved outwards at the rim.
    7. For wine freaks, the Riedel glasses are ideal, as they have created a separate glass for each grape variety.
    8. If you want to limit yourself to just one glass for all types of wine , it is best to choose a universal glass.
