Reading time approx. 1 min

This is how it works:

Ingredients list:

  • 750 ml vodka
  • 2 tbsp juniper berries
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/4 tsp whole allspice seeds
  • 3/4 tsp coriander seeds
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 2 peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 small sprig of lavender
  • 1 large two rosemary
  • 1 small piece of dried grapefruit zest
  • 1 small piece of dried lemon zest

Preparation:

  1. Mix the vodka with the juniper berries. Let it all steep for 24 hours and then filter out the juniper.
  2. Now add the remaining spices and let the mixture stand for another 12 hours.
  3. Then filter the gin through a sieve and fill it into bottles through the funnel.

Et voila, your homemade gin is ready!

Remember:

The yellowish discoloration is completely normal, because unlike industrially produced gin, yours is not filtered multiple times.

Gin sets for your own home

Of course, you can also buy gin sets that contain all the ingredients you need. So that you know what you're getting into when you buy, we've taken a close look at 3 different sets and compiled the most important facts about them.

1. Private Gin

Price: 49.95 euros
Manufacturer: Jorin Karner – Ship it GmbH

Contents:

  • 1x base spirit 0.45l (vodka 40% vol.)
  • 1x Apothecary bottle
  • 1x funnel
  • 1x Filter

Botanicals:

  • juniper
  • pimento
  • Coriander seeds
  • Red pepper
  • Orange peel
  • Lemon peel
  • hibiscus
  • cardamom

The first impression is great when you open it. All parts of the set are neatly packaged. The botanicals are in separate containers, so that mixing them later is very easy. The included vodka serves as the base spirit. The result is filled into the 0.5 liter bottle using the included funnel and filter.

Making your own gin is very simple. The juniper is crushed and added to the vodka. After 24 hours, more spices and botanicals can be added. Now you have to wait another 24 hours. Once the time is up, the entire contents are poured into a bottle through the filter in the funnel. The bottle should then be left open in the fridge for 12 hours. After that, the gin is ready for the first tasting.

Juniper dominates in this type of production. The taste naturally depends on the botanicals used. Nevertheless, this set can be used to make a passable gin, which tastes particularly good in combination with various tonics. It is important that the tonics are not too weak, otherwise the juniper will take over in the glass.

This set contains everything you need to make gin, making it a great gift. Since you can adjust the taste using the botanicals, everyone can use it to make their own favorite gin.

2. Dr. Charles Levine Gin Kit

Price: 42.99 euros
Manufacturer: bellyfeel UG

Contents:

  • 2x bottles
  • 1x funnel
  • 1x Filter

Botanicals:

  • No information

The Charles Levine set makes a very good impression at first glance. All components are safely packed in cardboard boxes. It comes with two bottles, a funnel and the botanicals. Unfortunately, no base spirit is included, so it has to be bought separately. The botanicals are not divided either. Only into juniper and "the remaining aromas". So unfortunately it is not possible to make the gin according to your own wishes.

After a base alcohol has been purchased, the juniper is added. This works best with a clear and tasteless vodka. 0.7 liters is enough. The juniper should be added whole to the bottle. The mixture must then rest for 12 hours. The botanicals are then added and another 24 hours are left to wait. The last step is filtering. Simply pour the gin into the bottles through the funnel and try.

The gin is golden brown when finished. It has a strong juniper scent, but is surrounded by a spicy coriander note. The Thomas Henry tonic goes very well with it, as it is very dominant. If the gin is drunk neat with a little ice, the juniper evaporates and the coriander takes center stage.

The taste of the gin is convincing, even if you have no influence on the result. Nevertheless, it produces an aromatic gin with a great aroma. Unfortunately, the base is missing and has to be bought. There is too little individuality here for a homemade gin.

3. Make your gin

Price: 39,50 euros
Manufacturer: S. Sebastian Henseler (Gentleman's Needs)

Contents:

  • 2x bottles
  • 1x funnel
  • 1x Filter

Botanicals:

  • juniper
  • almond
  • rose hip
  • Bourbon vanilla
  • Grains of Paradise
  • Bay leaves
  • Orange peel
  • Pink berries
  • rosemary

The package itself seems a little confusing. There are no cardboard holders for the components. This presentation prevents the set from being a great gift. When unpacked, the bottle and funnel are completely covered in fluff from the cushioning paper. Otherwise, the same components are included as in the Dr. Charles Levine kit and here too the base alcohol must be purchased separately.

To get your own gin into the bottle, you have to mix the vodka with the juniper. It is recommended to use a high-quality vodka with no taste of its own. The mixture must now rest for 24 hours. After that, all of the botanicals are put back into the bottle. Now you have to wait another 12 hours. So the gin is ready in just 36 hours.

The final gin looks a little like it has been aged in a barrel. The aromas of orange and vanilla are very strong. Nevertheless, fruity aromas such as rose hip and berries are also present. Overall, the taste is very good. The best accompaniment is the Thomas Henry Indian Tonic, as the aromas harmonize perfectly. This homemade gin is also delicious neat with a little ice.

The taste of this set is very good and the preparation was easy to carry out. Unfortunately, there was no base alcohol here either and the botanicals were not packaged individually, but only as a mixture. This means that the taste cannot be influenced, which in the end was not so bad.
