Are there any differences in taste?

The non-alcoholic alternative to gin is not necessarily suitable for drinking neat. But some brands are so good in mixed drinks that you hardly notice the difference to high-proof drinks. Various botanicals such as juniper, rosemary or cardamom are used. Here is our selection of the 10 best non-alcoholic gin alternatives .

Caution:

An alcohol content of less than 0.5 percent entitles the manufacturer to use the term “alcohol-free.” Some no-gins still contain alcohol. It’s best to look at the label and the manufacturer’s description.

Which non-alcoholic gins are the best?

Pentire Adrift

1 The full-bodiedness that non-alcoholic gins often lack is achieved by the Pentire with a special blend from the north coast of Cornwall: Botanicals such as samphire, sea fennel and sage give the distillate an incredible density of flavour and an almost oily texture. In combination with sea salt and citrus, the Pentire in the No Gin Tonic is intoxicating even without any alcohol.

Seedlip Spice 94/Grove 42/Garden 108

2 Seedlip is one of the pioneers in the field of (not 0%) alcohol-free gins and has three exciting alternatives in stock. In Spice 94, Jamaican allspice berries and various spice barks provide a strong, exotic citrus note, while in Grove 42, orange takes the fruity, sweet lead. The Garden 108, on the other hand, lives up to its name with a fine aroma of pea, thyme, hay and parsley. All three no-gins are good candidates for a Nogroni.

Undone No. 2 – Juniper Type

3 The Undone from Hamburg contains 0.3% alcohol because the botanicals - for example juniper, cardamom and allspice - were first distilled in the classic way and then dealcoholized. With this base, the No-Gin achieves a beautiful note of earthy, floral and lemony aromas. The strong acidity of the Undone No. 2 Juniper Type is perfect for a refreshing liaison with tonic water and thus a classic No Gin Tonic.

Homeland Bird-Free

4 Thyme plays the main role in Vogelfrei from Heimat Distillers. Supported by botanicals such as juniper, lavender, sage and lemon verbena, thyme leads the taste experience, which is also the same with tonic water. Ginger and chilli provide a hint of pleasant spiciness in the mouth. With its protagonist, Vogelfrei is perfect for the non-alcoholic version of the beguiling Raspberry Thyme Smash.

Sunner Botanicals

5 The traditional Cologne brewery is also making a foray into the topic of no-gin and is bringing a 0% variant to the bar that is suitable for the masses and which will win over even gin skeptics with its fruity sweetness. The fact that Sünner Botanicals has more calories than other no-gins is easily forgiven when you enjoy the strong raspberry aroma, which is accompanied by orange, peach, apricot and grapefruit and pleasantly fired up by a hint of chili. For those who are really "sweet", Bramble is wonderfully recommended.

Berliner Brandstifter Alcohol-free

6 Like its alcoholic counterpart Berlin Dry Gin, the Berliner Brandstifter Alcohol-Free also has a fine range of individually distilled botanicals such as juniper, rosehip and elderberry, which undergo seven-fold distillation after they are combined: quality you can taste! Cucumber and birch aromas give the not entirely alcohol-free gin alternative a floral, fresh presence, especially in the Cucumber Lemonade Chiller.

Laori Juniper No. 01

7 Another Juniper comes from the Berlin distillery Laori, formerly Noa. Juniper No. 01 uses separately distilled herbs and spices such as cardamom, juniper and rosemary, tickling the palate with a balanced mixture of refreshing lemon and spicy herbal notes. The slightly earthy, but also fruity taste due to orange aromas makes Juniper No. 1 perfect for a cool No Gin Tonic.

Sir Chill 0.0%

8 The name is misleading, because Sir Chill is not completely alcohol-free, but only has less than 0.5% and can therefore call itself that. But that is easily forgiven in view of its seductive vanilla note, which unfolds in the mouth as a chocolatey, creamy taste, and other exciting botanicals, including juniper, coriander, almond, tobacco and mandarin. With a dry tonic water, the almost overwhelming sweetness of the pure drink is in very good company.

Siegfried Wonderleaf

9 Bonn-based distillery Siegfried has deliberately ignored the big footsteps of its alcoholic brother Rhein Dry Gin and is taking a different path with the Wonderleaf, which is well worth taking! 18 different botanicals, including orange peel, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon, make the Wonderleaf with tonic water a full-bodied experience. The vegan, sugar-free and 0% version also works excellently in the Nogroni and the No Gin Fizz.

Sea Arch Coastal Juniper

10 With the Sea Arch, a sea breeze washes into the glass. This is ensured by botanicals harvested on the Devon Coast such as sea fennel and seaweed, mountain pine and of course the namesake juniper. The ethereal aromas meet blood and bitter orange and produce an attractive, multi-layered note that is just as convincing with its extravagance in the No Gin Tonic as it is in the Cucumber Lemonade Chiller.

The non-alcoholic gin variants are perfect for mixing the most popular cocktails and long drinks with gin. For example, try one of these recipes for non-alcoholic gin mixed drinks that we love.

  • 6 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • approx. 30 cl Indian Tonic Water
  • Ice cubes
  • Cucumber or lemon slice

The American: Nogroni

This aperitif - which, as the original Negroni, only contains alcoholic ingredients but tastes great without them - is best mixed directly into a chilled tumbler . Pour the ingredients in equal parts over the ice, stir and garnish your Negroni with an orange slice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • 2 cl non-alcoholic vermouth
  • 2 cl non-alcoholic bitter
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice

The refreshing one: No Gin Fizz

For the sparkling No Gin Fizz, fill the No-Gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup with a little ice into the cocktail shaker and shake it well before pouring it through a small sieve into the glass and filling it with more crushed ice and mineral water. Only authentic with a head of foam !

Ingredients:

  • 6 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • 3 cl lemon juice
  • 2 cl sugar syrup
  • approx. 10 cl mineral water
  • Crushed Ice
  • Lemon slice

The Berry One: Bramble

The Bramble is a perfect summer cocktail, and the non-alcoholic version is just as good for you . Lightly crush the berries at the bottom of the tumbler. Add a few ice cubes and pour in the liquid ingredients one after the other. Now all you have to do is stir and enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 5 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • 2 cl lemon juice
  • 1 cl sugar syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • approx. 8 fresh blackberries

The Wild One: Raspberry Thyme Smash

First, the thyme leaves and raspberries are crushed, then the mixture is put into the shaker together with no-gin, lime juice and sugar syrup. After shaking, the smash is poured over the ice that is already waiting in the tumbler. The Raspberry Thyme Smash works great without alcohol - your taste buds will explode anyway!

Ingredients:

  • 6 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • 3 cl lime juice
  • approx. 8 fresh raspberries
  • 2 cl sugar syrup
  • Ice cubes

The Green: Cucumber Lemonade Chiller

For the non-alcoholic Cucumber Lemonade Chiller, put the peeled ¾ cucumber with the rosemary leaves in a blender until you have a fine puree. Then “double strain” this: first through a fine-mesh kitchen sieve, then through an even finer tea strainer. Add no-gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup to the liquid and blend again for a few seconds. Pour over ice, top up with water, and add cucumber slices - delicious !

Ingredients:

  • 6 cl non-alcoholic gin
  • 1 sprig of rosemary
  • ¾ cucumber
  • 3 cl fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sugar syrup
  • mineral water
  • Ice cubes
  • Cucumber slice
