Get to know Monkey 47 Gin

An incredible 47 ingredients make the Monkey 47 Black Forest Dry Gin one of the most famous gins from Germany. The distillate comes from the Black Forest Distillers in Loßburg-Betzweiler in Baden-Württemberg and is one of the first gins to be produced in Germany. An award-winning gin that has nothing to hide behind international products. On the contrary: the others probably have to hide, because the Monkey 47 was named the best gin in the world at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in 2011. It has the 47 in its name because 47 botanicals ensure the good taste. But what's the deal with the monkey?

If someone from Baden-Württemberg drinks one glass too many, they may end up with a "monkey". One in their tea, complete with a thick head. However, it is rather unlikely that this is the story behind the monkey. It is much more likely that the primate found its way into the brand name via the British soldier Montgomery Collins. He was stationed in Germany in the 1950s, adopted a monkey from a zoo, opened the "Zum wilden Affen" inn in the Black Forest as a pensioner and sold homemade gin according to his own recipe. The makers of Monkey 47 dug up this recipe - and the gin and brand name were ready.

    At a glance

It's as if you were standing in a pharmacy from a bygone era. The bottle is brown, bulbous and a typical apothecary bottle. It is sealed with a cork. The label is jagged like a postage stamp. In the middle you can see the monkey, the gin's mascot.
With so many ingredients, it's no wonder that the nose is also treated to a spectacle that makes the impressions just roll over. Juniper and citrus are the first aromas you smell. Then the herbs join in. It takes a while to get a halfway overview. The alcohol, 47% ABV, is not intrusive.
Variety is also the order of the day when it comes to taste. Juniper is less noticeable on the palate. Instead, the bitter aromas take over. The Monkey 47 Black Forest Dry Gin is slightly oily in the mouth. A long finish, characterized by spicy notes, rounds off the tasting. All in all, it makes full use of its entire range of aromas. Boring is not the case.

    Our conclusion:

    • The Monkey 47 Black Forest Dry Gin is available in different versions: The Sloe Gin variant contains sugar and sloes, the Beef! Cut is dominated by pepper, the Distiller's Cut 2015 contains bearberry and the Distiller's Cut 2014 uses red clover.
    • The list of ingredients is long. And almost all of them come from the Black Forest. But not the juniper, which is imported from Tuscany. Although there is plenty of juniper growing in the Black Forest, the one from Tuscany gets more sun.
    • If you would like to combine the Monkey 47 with a tonic water, you should choose classic or bitter tonics. They produce interesting notes. The 1724 Tonic Water or Thomas Henry are particularly suitable.
