With the Knut Hansen Gin, another true northern light has seen the light of the gin world. The two people behind the idea, Kaspar Hagedorn and Martin Spieker, thought one evening in the Hamburg Schanze: We want to make our own gin. After many attempts and tests, the result was the Knut Hansen Gin, which is named after the North German sailor. Everything else should also have a touch of North Germany: regional ingredients, a distillery in Flensburg and a clay bottle, which is slowly but surely becoming the standard for Hamburg gins.
The Knut Hansen Gin embodies a piece of North German homeland, which is also underlined by the mix of botanicals. Whether it is the Lüneburg Heath, the Altes Land or North German cucumbers - a very interesting combination gives this gin its own flair, which does not have to hide behind that of other gins from the region. As the production is carried out with loving attention to detail and the gin is hand-filled, this raises corresponding expectations among gin fans.
Knut Hansen Gin is delivered in a traditional clay bottle with a cylindrical shape and makes a very rustic impression at first glance. The association with a " sailor's bottle " is further underlined by the rustic cork and the sailor's face with the bright blue eyes. The bald head of Knut Hansen's head also merges seamlessly into the curvature of the bottle to the bottle neck - this creates a very impressive 3D effect and a perfect sailor feeling. There is no label on the back either, but important information about the botanicals is printed on the back. An all-round very well-executed look.
It's as if you were standing in a pharmacy from a bygone era. The bottle is brown, bulbous and a typical apothecary bottle. It is sealed with a cork. The label is jagged like a postage stamp. In the middle you can see the monkey, the gin's mascot.
The tasting begins surprisingly, because the juniper note in the Knut Hansen Gin is much more present than initially thought during the nosing. The juniper is accompanied by a sophisticated mix of basil and apple, which supports the Mediterranean impression. The cucumber remains a little in the background, but this is also due to the vegetable itself. It offers more aromatically than later in the taste. Nevertheless, the light hint of cucumber at the end contributes to us being able to describe the Knut Hansen Gin as the perfect balance between straightforward and complex. The honest juniper taste will also delight fans of classic gins and the exquisite blend of other botanicals ensures that this gin experience remains something very special.
